ReelRatings Free Edition
Privacy
Effective October 28, 2026 · Applies to Free Edition 1.12.8
Information used on your device
The extension reads poster titles, platform/title identifiers, category labels, and available release-year or movie/series hints on supported pages. It uses these to match releases and add rating boxes. The page list tracks up to 120 nearby loaded titles and changes as you scroll. It does not read streaming passwords or account cookies.
ReelRatings inspects tab URLs locally to recognize a supported streaming site and connect its toolbar popup to the right tab. It does not send full streaming-page URLs, your streaming account details, or unrelated page content to its data providers.
Direct requests to data providers
Saved local results and the packaged catalogue are checked first. When data is missing or needs refreshing, the extension can make these HTTPS requests:
-
IMDb title search —
v3.sg.media-imdb.com: receives a discovered movie/series title or the search text you enter to find IMDb identities. Matching also uses available year/type hints locally. -
IMDb ratings —
datasets.imdbws.com: supplies the fixed public ratings file, downloaded on demand to your browser's IndexedDB. This file request contains no individual title query. -
IMDb details —
www.imdb.com/title/…: receives a specific IMDb title ID when you open details, or when a matched release needs a score fallback because it is missing from the ratings file. -
Rotten Tomatoes —
www.rottentomatoes.com/search: receives a confirmed movie/series title. The returned title, year, type and critic percentage are checked before a red rating box is shown. -
Netflix public metadata —
www.netflix.com/gb/title/…: receives the numeric Netflix title ID as fallback evidence when ordinary matching fails or yields no score. When you open a Netflix poster's details and IMDb supplies no plot, the same page can provide a short synopsis after its title, type and movie year match the selected release. This request does not use your Netflix login.
Source requests omit browser credentials and referrers. Providers and network intermediaries can still receive ordinary connection information, including your IP address, request timing and the requested query or title ID. Public IMDb poster images may also load from HTTPS image hosts without a referrer. Providers apply their own terms and privacy policies.
Automatic new lookups prioritize visible or nearby posters. Hidden streaming tabs stop starting new lookups; already admitted work can finish and save its result. Returning to the tab resumes work. Cached results, duplicate-request sharing, request spacing and provider cooldowns reduce repeated requests. Opening details or entering a search can request data separately. Once a release is confirmed, its Rotten Tomatoes request can overlap the first IMDb ratings download. Visible posters can retry temporary failures with bounded backoff, and Rotten Tomatoes failures can retry after their source cooldown without a page reload. Hidden views pause these timers. Ratings work without a runtime connection to Vercel, Upstash or a ReelRatings ratings server.
Local storage and retention
Data is stored in this extension's browser-local storage, not Chrome Sync. Background-owned Chrome storage is restricted to trusted extension contexts.
- Preferences and watchlist: settings and up to 200 saved titles remain until you change/remove them or uninstall the extension.
- Confirmed matches: up to 200 choices linking a streaming title to the IMDb release you selected remain locally until replaced, evicted by this limit, or removed with extension storage.
- Cached records: up to 1,000 searches, movie details, scores, source results and automatic identity links. Successful searches and matched movie records usually last one day; empty searches and unavailable scores usually retry after 15 minutes. Automatic streaming-to-IMDb identities can last 30 days, and Netflix metadata evidence up to seven days. Capacity limits may evict records earlier.
- Rotten Tomatoes results: verified scores are reused for one day, missing or ambiguous results for 15 minutes, and temporary failures for at least one minute or a provider's longer retry interval.
- IMDb ratings snapshot: the downloaded score/vote index stays in IndexedDB on your device. It is checked for refresh on use after one day. A saved snapshot can remain usable during refresh or a failed refresh for up to seven days. Packaged IMDb scores also expire after seven days; packaged RT observations after one day.
- Temporary popup state: the selected poster, available cached movie, lookup hints, tab/window IDs and a timestamp are kept in Chrome session storage to open the toolbar popup. The target is consumed once and expires after two minutes. A separate most-recent hover record stores a temporary identifier, active flag, tab/window IDs and a timestamp so hover details can close. Session records are cleared when Chrome exits.
Expiration controls reuse; expired cache entries may remain physically stored until replaced, pruned or cleared. The extension does not sell these records or send your watchlist or confirmed release choices to a ReelRatings service.
Your controls
You can pause automatic poster ratings, remove watchlist items, choose a different release, change site access in Chrome, or uninstall the extension. Clear cached ratings removes cached lookup/source records and the downloaded IMDb index. It preserves preferences, the watchlist and user-confirmed matches. Packaged catalogue data remains part of the installed extension. Uninstalling removes extension storage.
Chrome grants host permissions for the whole listed host; paths in those permission entries do not narrow that grant. This includes each listed Amazon host. On Amazon, ReelRatings limits its content-script matches and reconnection checks to the declared video paths; ordinary shopping pages are not scanned.
Copy diagnostics is optional and copies a report to your clipboard. It includes the extension version, enabled/connection state, page title counts, initialization errors, source HTTP/error status and ratings-cache readiness/date. It excludes movie names, full page URLs, account details, cookies, credentials and watchlist contents. The report is not sent automatically; you choose whether and where to share it.
Limited use
ReelRatings uses the page and locally saved information described here to provide its user-facing movie/series rating, matching, search and watchlist features. It does not use this information for personalized advertising, sale to data brokers, unrelated browsing profiles or credit decisions. Information is transmitted to the listed providers only as needed for these features. This policy describes the extension's compliance with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements; it is not a statement of store approval.
This page and support
This privacy page has no scripts, analytics or external resources. Opening the page or downloading an installation ZIP is a normal website request; the hosting provider can receive ordinary network information for that request. The installed Free Edition does not use the download host as a ratings backend.
